... a small and committed group of singers who enjoy performing a wide range of classical music. The choir gives four or five concerts a year, always with appropriate instrumental accompaniment and has become known for reviving works outside the mainstream choral repertory and presenting them in new and accessible ways, as well as for the quality of its performances of more familiar pieces.
The choir’s repertory spans six centuries of music ranging from the Florentine Music for a Medici Wedding in 1539 through to music specially composed for it. In recent years, the choir has presented a rare semi-staged performance of Cavalieri’s The Drama of Body and Soul - the world’s first opera - and mounted a full-scale Brahms Requiem with 200 guest singers from all over the country. In 2010 it gave the first performance of Edward Lambert's Rossetti Requiem, a large scale work for soloists, choir and orchestra, and in 2011 Paul Robinson was the guest conductor in Liszt's Via Crucis and Dvorak's Mass in D. Purcell’s King Arthur was reconstructed with Dryden’s original text, and Handel's Funeral Anthem was presented last summer complete with a bereaved King George II played by local actor Don Crerar. It will have performed five concerts this season: Dido & Aeneas in Thatcham, Schütz’s Christmas Story in St George’s Wash Common, and in March a concert of Elizabethan music in Newbury’s fine Methodist Church. In June 2012 we repeat the sell-out concert we first presented in Newbury seven years ago: a Vivaldi-thon. Besides giving concerts in Newbury, the choir has also visited Thatcham, Andover, Hungerford, Lambourn, Chieveley, Burghclere, Chute and Abbotts Ann. Drawing on the many superb performers who live in the area our concerts often give valuable opportunities to young students as well as professionals and non-professionals alike. Future plans include a Bach concert in Douai Abbey in November. See archive for full information on past concerts. Recent guest conductors: Stephen Westrop, Paul Robinson Recent soloists include: Jacqueline Pischorn, Jeanette Ager, Siona Stockel, Ben Alden, Catherine Rogers, Christopher Gillet, Ian Caddy, Paul Robinson, Marcus Farnsworth, Joanna Soane, Clare Bessent, Nicola Wydenbach, Callum Thorpe, Kristy Swift, Katrina Damigos, Peter Wilman, Jeremy Hagan, Jake Gill Instrumental soloists include: David Owen Norris, James Toll, Elizabeth Drew, Hannah Medlam, Lukas Medlam, Rebecca Millard, Patrick Rutland, Madeleine Millar, Lynda Sayce |
